April brought several late cold snaps—
the sweater came off, then went back on again.
Two weeks ago I was still walking the dog through morning mist along the creek,
listening on repeat to Finding Licorice by the River,
a new track released at the end of 2025 by Railway Suicide Train.
Ding-ding-dong-dong, rustle-rustle—
my steps light and quick.

Then after a few days of warm southern winds,
summer arrived without warning.
The playlist I was editing toward the end of the month suddenly began to feel restless.
So at the start of May, I revised it over and over again,
until finally, after the holiday ended, it came together.

The playlist opens with “Kairos,”
an astonishing new piece by Laura Misch.
She plays into the eternal conversation between waves and rocks,
dissolving both the boundaries of the song
and the linearity of time itself.
From there, it drifts into that ambiguous terrain
shared by trip-hop, shoegaze,
dream pop, and indie electronica—
a 2020s attempt to place a blur filter
over forty-megapixel high-definition photographs,
searching for the innocence of the early internet.
Or like Sega Bodega and BEA1991,
capturing language somewhere between dreams and water.

In the end, only the Parisian Vietnamese artist An Luu
truly seems to come from another era,
leaving behind only a handful of songs
to be rediscovered in the twenty-first century.

Best consumed after sunset.
Happy beginning of summer.
